Sisal ropes look like straw but are a composite of fibers of the sisal agave. We know Sisal today from scratching trees for cats. The ropes had to be produced like papyrus ropes before. Although the willow branches did not have to be knotted together, they had to be soaked in water for several days before being built up. Only the moisture made the branches flexible enough for binding to the scaffolding. Due to the water in the wood, however, the willows were also significantly heavier and thus placed a higher load on the scaffolding for the scaffolding builders i.e. the scaffolding workers.
Scaffolds are, in general, plugged pipes. These can be made of aluminum or steel and usually have a diameter of almost 5 cm. These standardized pipes can be found everywhere on every construction site and at every scaffolding builder. For what would be scaffolding without its pipes.
The History of Scaffolding:
In the Middle Ages, scaffoldings made of cantilever and scaffoldings were built, which were tied with the help of rope connections and cross-pieces. With increasing complexity and height of houses and buildings in the Renaissance, the requirements on the scaffolding also continued to grow. Initially, scaffolding was only auxiliary constructions for material transport and construction. In the Renaissance, they were increasingly used as facade scaffolding and supporting scaffolds. For example, in the construction of St. Peter’s in Rome: first, the construction scaffolding was built, and then the barrel vault of stone was built over the scaffolding. Then the scaffolding was rebuilt and the huge roof was built.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the development of the scaffolding went a decisive step with the industrialization: iron was made faster and easier to produce scaffold bars thanks to the new and more efficient production processes. The bending technique of the metal was also greatly improved. In the middle of the 19th century, the first series of iron constructions came onto the market. We designate them as scaffold-framework constructions.
At the end of the 19th century, steel was increasingly produced industrially. With this and the increasing importance of structural analysis, the steel framework has become increasingly popular. This scaffold consists of the steel tube or coupling constructions. With the construction of the first skyscrapers, the former auxiliary frameworks themselves became a building material for reinforced concrete. The Empire State Building, for example, consists of it.
In 1952 the first system was developed. According to the modular principle, frames and modules are plugged together in system frames. The stability of the scaffolding, therefore, comes from the right combination of the individual parts. The advantage: a significantly faster and more stable design.
Today, however, not only is the safety of scaffolding important there are a lot of requirements and quality criteria that avoid accidents today and thus make a good scaffolding builder. Today, the construction scaffolding also plays a major role in advertising because it is the ideal platform for posters in the public space.
